San Antonio Missions Overview:
When Texas was a provincial territory of Spain, a number of missions were built throughout the territory for both protection and to help convert Native Americans to Christianity. Missions San Jose, San Juan, Espada, and Concepcion were built over the 17th, 18th and 19th centuries. Today these four historic San Antonio landmarks have been preserved and are open to the public as part of the San Antonio Missions National Historical Park.
