August marks the end of summer and, of course, towns across the Lone Star State aren't about to let summer slip away without a few big festivals and events. From fishing tournaments to music festivals, Texas has an event for everyone in August.
Held in the waters around Port Isabel and South Padre Island, the Texas International Fishing Tournament is the largest salt water fishing tournament in Texas. The tournament has bay, offshore and fly fishing divisions and draws around 1,200 particpants annually. This year's tournament is set for July 29 - Aug. 2.
Held in downtown Round Rock the second Sunday of every month, the Main Street Stroll is a free, family-oriented event featuring artists, musicians and street performers.
Held at the Grimes County Fairgrounds, Navasota's annual Blues Festival features local, regional and international performers. The 2008 version of the Blues Festival is set for Aug. 7 - 8.
Held in Denton on an annual basis for over seven decades, the North Texas State Fair features a rodeo, live music, games, carnival, barbecue cook-off and more. This year's edition of the North Texas State Fair is scheduled for Aug. 21 - 29.
Attracting over 11,000 cyclists from across the country, the Hotter 'n Hell 100 is one of the most popular 100-mile cycle events in the nation. This year's Hotter 'n Hell 100 is set for Aug. 29.
With hundreds of thousands of dollars on the line, the Texas Legends Billfish Tournament has no problem drawing a crowd. Anglers may leave out of any Texas port. Weigh-in is at Robert's Point Park in Port Aransas. This year's Texas Legends Billfish Tournament is set for August 6 - 9.
With 22 participating Hill Country wineries, the Harvest Wine Trail offers a variety of special events, tastings, tours and entertainment. This year's Harvest Wine Trail is set for Aug. 14 - 16 and 21 - 23.
Held at Waterloo Park, the Austin Ice Cream Festival is a great way to cool off from the summer heat. The festival itself includes games, activities, live entertainment and, of course, ice cream. The 2009 Austin Ice Cream Festival is set for Aug. 15.
Three days of jazz at Marfa's Crowley Theatre and Padre's Marfa comprise the Marfa Jazz Festival, which is a unique opportunity to hear quality jazz music in one of Texas' most unique towns. This year's Marfa Jazz Festival is set for Aug. 28-30.
