Texas Junior Angler State Championship Tournament

By Danno Wise, About.com

On July 14, young anglers from across the state will have an opportunity to compete for the title of Texas Junior Angler State Champion. The first annual TJASC tournament, which includes three competitive age divisions, is set to be held on that date at the South Padre KOA and Fish Bones Pier on South Padre Island. Participating junior anglers will have the opportunity to fish the clear waters of the Lower Laguna Madre while vying for this prestigious title.

During the tournament, kids age 4-6 will compete in the Piggy Perch division, while kids 7-12 will compete as Small Fry and kids ages 13-17 will compete as Junior Anglers.

Small Fry and Junior Angler participants will be allowed to weigh one fish from each of three species – flounder, redfish and speckled trout. Awards will be given for the largest fish of each species.

The overall winner will be determined by the largest combined weight. Small Fry anglers will be allowed to weigh three fish of any species. First through third place winners will be determined by the weight of the total bag (combined weight of the catch).

Winners will be awarded trophies and tackle packs. Overall division winners will also be awarded a rod and reel combination. Entry fee is $50 per person for the Small Fry and Junior Angler divisions and $25 for the Piggy Perch.
