West Texas Golf Courses

World Class Links Await Way Out West

By Danno Wise, About.com

Like a scene straight out of the movie "Tin Cup," several top-notch golf courses spring up from the West Texas landscape - seemingly in the middle of nowhere. However, although they may not be near any of the states major population centers, these courses offer unique and challenging layouts, as well as unmatched scenery. If you happen to be heading to Big Bend country, here are a few of the better places to "tee it up."

Lone Star Golf Club - Located less than 10 minutes from the El Paso airport, Lone Star Golf Club is a full-service 18-hole public golf course, with pro shop, lessons, club rentals and more.

Painted Dunes Desert Golf Course - El Paso's Painted Dunes Desert Golf Course offers 27 of the most scenic holes in the American Southwest and has been consistently named as one of the top courses in Texas and the Southwest by Golf Digest and other national publications.

Ambush at Lajitas - Located in the West Texas outpost of Lajitas, Ambush at Lajitas is a unique 18-hole course, featuring four holes on an island in the Rio Grande River.

Hogan Park Municipal Golf Course - Midland's Hogan Park Golf Course is a 36-hole public course. The Quail Course consists of the original 18-holes. The Roadrunner Course is an 18-hole links style course.

Nueva Vista Golf Course - Nueva Vista is a family-friendly, 18-hole golf course located in the West Texas town of Midland. The course boasts a fully stocked proshop, lessons by PGA professionals, clinics and more - all in a friendly, comfortable atmosphere.

Ratliff Ranch Golf Links - Ratliff Ranch is a true links style golf course located way out west in Odessa. Don't let the surrounding, wide-open West Texas landscape fool you, if you want to keep your score low on Ratliff, you had better keep it in the middle of these narrow fairways.
