Port Aransas History:
Originally called Wild Horse Island, Mustang Island is home to the small village of Port Aransas. The original community on this spot of land named Sand Point in the 1830s. During the Mexican-American War in the mid-1800s, a fort was built next to Aransas Pass. This fort was used until after the Civil War. Following the war, the community of Mustang Island underwent a succession of name changes. The town first went by the name Ropesville. Next, the town name was changed to Tarpon due to the large amount of tarpon caught off the coast. Finally in the early 1900s, the town acquired its present name, Port Aransas.
