Every January, many Americans have vowed to get in better shape or have set goals for themselves, such as running in their first marathon, 5k, 10k, etc. in the year ahead. If you are looking to keep those New Year’s resolutions in 2013, the Texas running scene offers several opportunities to meet those goals in the first few months of 2013.
Spring Running Events in Texas
March and April weather in Texas is just right for outdoor activities. As a result, a number of running and walking events, as well as triathlons and adventures races, are scheduled for the fourth month. Here are some of the highlights of Texas' running event calendar during the spring season.
Texas has a variety of running events for fitness enthusiasts. However, for top runners, marathons are the ultimate challenge and those wishing to push themselves will find plenty of marathon events across the Lone Star State.
Held in the Capitol City, the Livestrong Austin Marathon is one of the most scenic races in Texas, with nearly half the course being run along Town Lake and the Colorado River. The rolling hills of Austin also make this one of the more challenging races offered in the Lone Star State.
What started as a humble race with just over 100 runners has blossomed into the largest single sporting event in Houston. This year's Houston Marathon features nearly 18,000 participants, making it one of the largest running events in the country.
Dallas' White Rock Marathon
One of the most unique running events in the nation, Dallas' White Rock Marathon is a combination fitness festival and day-long concert. With bands stationed at every mile marker along the marathon route, the White Rock Marathon is truly a one-of-a-kind event.
3M Half Marathon and Relay
The 3M Half Marathon and Relay, held each January in Austin, is one of the country's top half marathon events. The 13.1-mile course follows a mostly downhill route through Austin and includes a two-leg relay and 50-yard non-competitive Kids Fun Run for children ages 10 and under.
SunMart Texas Trails Endurance Run
Held each year in the Huntsville State Park, just north of Houston, the Sunmart Endurance Run features 50-mile and 50-k endurance runs and is one of the largest Ultra events in the country.
World's Longest Causeway Run and Wellness Walk
Taking place on the Queen Isabella Causeway between Port Isabel and South Padre Island, the World's Longest Causeway Run and Wellness Walk is one of the most popular running events in Texas, largely because of the unique vantage point participants gain as they cross the famous causeway enroute to the finish line on South Padre.
Ft. Worth's annual Cowtown Marathon is actually six events in one: USA T&F certified marathon and half-marathon, three-person relay marathon, USA T&F certified 10k and 5k for adults, and a USA T&F certified 5k for kids.

Gecko Adventure Race
A team adventure race which includes trekking, mountain biking, paddling and swimming. The race is held each year in Fort Parker State Park.
Statesman Capitol 10,000
Billed as the largest 10k in Texas, the Capitol 10,000 is sponsored by the Austin American Statesman and covers the distance between downtown Austin and Auditorium Shores.
Run Through the Vines
This unique race, which features both 5k and 10k events, is held annually at the Messina Hof Winery just outside of Bryan/College Station.
Johnson City Relay for Life
This annual Hill Country event is a fundraiser for the American Cancer Society and includes an all-night walk, live entertainment, food, music and more.
Beach to Bay Relay
Thousands flock to the “Sparkling City By The Sea” to take part in Corpus Christi’s Beach to Bay Relay Marathon. This event features six-person teams running a 26.2-mile marathon relay-style from, as the name suggests, the beach to the bay.
Best Dam Run In Texas
A new event, Waco’s Best Dam Run In Texas is just that – a dam run. The 5k course takes runners across the Lake Waco dam, offering a scenic vista to take their minds off the task at hand.
Mardi Gras Beach Run
Proving that not all Mardi Gras activities are unhealthy, Galveston’s Mardi Gras Beach Run features both a 5k and 10k, which are run along Stewart Beach and the Galveston Seawall.
Big D Texas Marathon
This annual marathon starts and finishes at Dallas Fair Park - site of the Texas State Fair. The course winds through a variety of Dallas neighborhoods, as well as nearby White Rock Lake. A half-marathon and 5k are also held in conjunction with the Texas Marathon.
Bluebonnets on the Brazos Fun Run
Held each April, the Bluebonnets on the Brazos Fun Run has both a 5k and 1k division. Proceeds benefit the Luke and Rachel Batten Foundation.
D'Feet Cancer 5k & 10k
Held each year as a fundraiser to help Galveston area women with the early detection and fighting of breast cancer, the D'Feet Cancer Fun Run, walk and race is based at the Moody Gardens complex on Galveston Island. The event offers 5k and 10k certified races, as well as a 5k walk and 1k kids run.
