Texas Art Museums

Those unfamiliar with Texas may not think of it as a cultural hub for art and artists. However, the Lone Star State is home to an impressive number of talented and creative artists, as well as an amazing number of art museums and galleries.

1. Houston Museum of Fine Art

Opened in 1924, the Houston's Museum of Fine Arts was the first art museum in Texas and the third in the American South. With over 300,000 square feet of display space and 18 acres of gardens, it remains one of the largest art museums in the United States and welcomes over 2.5 million visitors each year.

2. Austin Museum of Art

Located in downtown Austin, the Austin Museum of Art provides over 5,000 square feet of ever-changing visual art exhibits.

3. Dallas Museum of Art

Established in 1903, the Dallas Museum of Art offers one of the most extensive art exhibits to be found in the Lone Star State.

4. San Antonio Museum of Art

The San Antonio Museum of Art has several outstanding exhibits on permanent display and frequently hosts world-class touring exhibits.

5. Elisabet Ney Museum

The Austin area home and studio of famed sculptor Elisabet Ney has been preserved as a museum, displaying her works, furnishings and tools.

6. Amon Carter Museum

Originally established by Amon Carter Sr. to hold his extensive collection of paintings, Ft. Worth's Amon Carter Museum is dedicated to collecting, preserving and exhibiting American art.

7. Art Museum of South Texas

Featuring more than 12,000 square feet of galleries, as well as classrooms, studios, work spaces and a library, the Art Museum of South Texas serves as the cultural hub of Corpus Christi.

8. El Paso Museum of Art

The El Paso Museum of Art has a variety of art displays - both permanent and traveling - and also offers classes, workshops and other educational events.

9. McNay Art Museum

Housed in the former home of San Antoni oil heiress Marion Koogler McNay, the McNay Art Museum features an extensive collection of American and European fine art.

10. Art City Austin

Art City Austin displays original artwork in a variety of mediums and genre. The festival also includes live music, food, kids' entertainment, art activities and artist demonstrations.
