Texas has a rich and varied history. The Lone Star State is also home to an impressive number of museums dedicated to telling the story of Texas, from pre-history right up to present day.

1. Bob Bullock Story of Texas Museum

Many visitors to Austin, the Texas state capital city, are intrigued by the history of the Lone Star State. Luckily for them, the city is also home to the Bob Bullock Story of Texas Museum, which encapsulates the state's history and showcases it via a variety of interactive exhibits.

2. Museums of Port Isabel

The tiny town of Port Isabel in Deep South Texas is steeped in history. As one of Texas’ oldest towns, Port Isabel served as a strategic port during both the Mexican-American War and the Civil War. Today, the Museums of Port Isabel celebrate and spotlight the area's rich history.

3. San Jacinton Museum

If you happen to be heading to Houston or Southeast Texas, you can't pass up an opportunity to visit the San Jacinto Monument and San Jacinto Battleground - the very place where Texas gained its independence.

4. Sixth Floor Museum

This museum is dedicated to preserving and celebrating information on John F. Kennedy's life, career, assassination and death. Located on the sixth floor of the Texas School Book Depository building - the very spot the sniper's gun was found - the Sixth Floor Museum let's you gain a feel for how things happened in 1963.

5. Panhandle Plains History Museum

Located in Canyon, the Panhandle Plains History Museum is the largest historical museum in Texas and celebrates western heritage, paleontology, geology, fine art and more.
