Brownwood and Brown County were formed in the mid-1800s. From the earliest time in its history, agriculture played an important role in Brownwood. In 1929, plans and construction began for the creation of Lake Brownwood as a source of water for the town and county. The lake filled in 1932 and opened to the public in 1938. During the first half of the 20th century, Camp Bowie played an important role in training US troops, particularly during WWII.
