Lake Conroe CVB
Conroe Overview:
Located on the shores of its namesake lake, Conroe lies a short distance north of Houston and offers visitors top notch golfing, shopping, and, of course, water sports.
Conroe History:
In 1881, a sawmill was established at the site of present-day Conroe by Houston lumberman Isaac Conroe. The community was granted a post office in 1884 and took the name of its founder. During the late 1800s, Conroe was a major railroad hub and shipping point. Oil was discovered in the area in 1931, helping renew the economy following the Great Depression. Lake Conroe was created in 1973, immediately transforming the area into a major recreation destination.
Conroe Hotels:
Baymont Inn, 936-539-5100; Comfort Inn, 936-890-2811; Holiday Inn Express, 936-788-5200; La Quinta Inns & Suites, 936-228-0790.
Conroe Attractions:
Lake Conroe, obviously, is the top draw in Conroe. Fishing, boating, swimming, and skiing are all popular activities. Tour boats also operate on the lake. The Outlets at Conroe outlet mall draws huge crowds, as do the dozens of antique shops scattered throughout Conroe and surrounding Montgomery County. Golf is also a big enticement for visitors and the Conroe area is home to no fewer than a dozen public and private courses.
