June in Texas

By

June is truly the start of summer vacation season in Texas. Public schools across the state have let out for the summer and seasonal attractions are once again open for the summer season. And, June kicks the summer season off right, with a number of events and activities slated to be held throughout the month.

To begin with, all of the traditional summer vacation activities aer available in June. Thousands of visitors will be heading to the beach. With Texas boasting hundreds of miles of coastline, there is more than enough room for beachgoers to spread out and enjoy a day at the beach, whether they intend on swimming, sunning, beachcombing, surfing, windsurfing or just relaxing. Likewise, rivers and lakes across the Lone Star State will see a number of vacationers looking to enjoy a variety of watersports, including water skiing, jet skiing, boating, swimming and fishing. And, with June seeing full-fledged summer heat, it is also a good time to seek out one of the many "swimming holes" scattered across Texas.

Another great way to spend time outdoors during June is to visit one of the many great Texas State Parks. While every state park offers a variety of outdoor activities, some parks certainly draw larger crowds than others in the summer months. Locations such as Garner State Park in Concan are among the most popular summer outdoor getaways in Texas. Encompassing just over 1,400 acres - including 10 acres of river frontage along the Frio River, Garner State Park is one of the most popular summer destinations for Texans and visitors to Texas alike.

June is also the time when seasonal theme parks and water parks across Texas are fully open and operational for the summer season. From Six Flags Fiesta Texas in San Antonio to one of the several Schlitterbahn Waterpark locations and numerous other theme and water parks in Texas, there are a number of great places to spend a fun-filled day with the family.

In addition, there are a number of great festivals filling out the events calendar in June. The headline event this month is the Kerrville Folk Festival. Having run continuously since 1972, the Kerrville Folk Festival is the longest running festival of its type in North America. Lasting 18 days, the festival features over 100 songwriters, concerts, arts & crafts, kids concerts and more. Also held in June, Aransas Pass' annual Shrimporee offers entertainement, food, music and more. Highlights of the festival, which is billed as the "Largest Shrimp Festival in the World," include a carnival, kidfish tank, shrimp cookoff, petting zoo, arts & crafts, live entertainment and more. San Antonio's Texas Folklife Festival is an annual celebration of the diverse cultures that combine to make Texas unique. The festival features live music, costume, arts & crafts, and more. In the tiny town of Luling, the annual Watermelon Thump is a four-day celebration of everyone's favorite summer treat - watermelon. The festival includes a carnival, kiddie rides, food booths, live entertainment, watermelon seed spitting contest, watermelon eating contest and more. These are but a few of the festivals and celebrations held throughout the month of June. Virtually every weekend in June sees a unique event staged somewhere in the Lone Star State, providing yet another reason to spend your summer vacation in Texas.

Regardless of whether you're looking for an excitement filled vacation thrill seeking at theme parks, unwinding with a relaxing day at the beach or hanging out and attending a unique festival, Texas has just the right combination of events, attractions and activities for a great early summer vacation in June.
