Small Towns in the South Texas Plains Region

Many of the towns found in the South Texas Plains have an Old Mexico feel to them. That is hardly surprising when you consider most of them have a strong Mexican heritage that is celebrated to this day.
Alice
With pleasant year around temperatures, Alice is a wonderful little South Texas town, with convenient access to a number of natural attractions, as well as Corpus Christi museums, attractions, restaurants, and clubs.
Beeville
The Bercleir Mansion and Beeville Art Museum are just a couple of the attractions that attract visitors to the South Texas Town of Beeville, which also boasts a unique antique shopping trail.
Brownsville
This historic border town offers a world class zoo, golf courses, top-flight birding, as well as quick access to Matamoros, Mexico and South Padre Island.
Cuero
Claiming the dual titles of "Wildflower Capital of Texas" and "Turkeyfest Capital of the World," the town of Cuero is a favorite stop for visitors in South Texas.
Floresville
Floresville is a popular spot for history buffs. This tiny South Texas Town features a number of historic landmarks and buildings - many of which are still in use.
Gonzales
Known as the "Cradle of Texas Independence," the tiny town of Gonzales still celebrates its prominent place in Texas history today.
Goliad
The site of one of the most infamous battles of the Texas Revolution, Goliad is a top spot for history buffs traveling through Texas.
Harlingen
Located on the upper edge of the Rio Grande Valley, a short drive from both Mexico and South Padre Island, Harlingen offers visitors a central location to all South Texas sites.
Kingsville
Located along a desolate stretch of South Texas ranch land, Kingsville is home to Texas A&M Kingsville, a variety of museums and, of course, its namesake ranch - the King Ranch - tours of which are still popular among tourists. Additionally, Kingsville offers fishermen close access to the famed Baffin Bay.
McAllen
Like most South Texas border towns, McAllen offers visitors an opportunity to shop in Mexico, as well as wonderful birding and other attractions on this side of the border.
Mission, Texas
The historic South Texas town of Mission, named for the La Lomita Mission, is home to the annual Citrus Festival, world-class birding, Winter Texan events and more.
Panna Maria
The "Oldest Polish Community in the USA," Panna Maria is a South Texas town brimming with history.
Poteet
Located just south of San Antonio, Poteet is home to the world famous "Poteet Strawberry Festival."
Three Rivers
Located near the confluence of the Atascosa, Frio and Nueces Rivers, about halfway between San Antonio and Corpus Christi, Three Rivers is home to Choke Canyon Reservoir, Choke Canyon State Park and numerous other venues for outdoor enthusiasts.
Zapata
Billed as the "Home of Falcon Lake," Zapata serves as a gateway to the fabled reservoir for anglers and water sport enthusiasts. Zapata also offers a variety of outdoor activities such as birding, golf and hunting and is the winter home to throngs of "Winter Texans."
