Cotton Bowl Classic

Annual New Year's Day College Football Tradition

By Danno Wise, About.com

Cotton Bowl
Jan. 2, 2009 will see the 73rd edition of the AT&T Cotton Bowl Classic. One of the oldest college football bowl games, the Cotton Bowl has been a Dallas tradition since its founding in 1937.

Over the year’s, the Cotton Bowl has developed a reputation for being one of the most competitive and exciting post season college football games each year. This year’s game promises to live up to that reputation, as the 7th ranked Texas Tech Red Raiders clash with the Ole Miss Rebels.

In what will be the final Cotton Bowl Classic played in the Cotton Bowl, fans should expect to see plenty of offensive fireworks. Graham Harrell and the Texas Tech Red Raiders climbed as high as #2 in the national polls this year. They're looking to prove their single loss shouldn't have eliminated them from the spotlight when they go up against Ole Miss. First year Ole Miss coach Houston Nutt is no stranger to the Cotton Bowl, having taken his Arkansas Razorbacks there last year.

Of course, the Cotton Bowl traditionally involves much more than the game itself and this year is no exception. The annual Cotton Bowl Parade will be held on New Year’s Eve in downtown Dallas and the Cotton Bowl Music Festival is set to run from Dec. 29 through Jan. 2.
