Hurricane Katrina Victims Relocate to Texas

Influx of Evacuees Leads to Huge Demand for Volunteers and Donations

By Danno Wise, About.com

Although volunteer work isn’t what most folks have in mind for a Texas vacation, now is a time which offers plenty of volunteer opportunities, as tens of thousands of people affected by Hurricane Katrina have sought shelter in areas such as Houston and San Antonio. In addition to non-skilled manpower, there is a huge demand for professionally trained personnel.

Even if you don’t have the time to volunteer, if you happen to be visiting one of those cities in the near future, you may want to consider dropping off some canned foods, clothes, or other needed items at the Astrodome at Reliant Park in Houston or the Alamodome in San Antonio. Both of these arenas are serving as shelters and have “drop areas” to receive donations.

In addition to Houston and San Antonio, the Central Texas relief effort is underway and small towns across East, South, Southeast and Central Texas are hosting evacuees and enrolling children in their schools.

If you aren’t able to make it to Texas or any of the affected states to volunteer or deliver donations, you can always pledge donations to the Red Cross, Salvation Army, or any number of other relief organizations. There are plenty of ways to help and, right now, there are plenty of people who need it.
