Located at the tip of Texas, in the border city of Brownsville, the Gladys Porter Zoo has long been recognized as one of the nation's best zoos. The zoo, which covers 26 acres and includes over 1,300 animals, attracts close to 400,000 visitors to South Texas on an annual basis.

Gladys Porter Zoo was founded by Mrs. Gladys Porter and originally opened in 1971. Since then, it has constantly expanded to add more animals and exhibits. In addition to its extensive list of animal exhibits, Gladys Porter offers a wide variety of educational programs for children and adults alike.

Among the Zoo's most popular exhibits are Macaw Canyon, the free-flight aviary, and the Tropical America display. The Zoo also features an excellent botanical garden and the ever-popular Small World children's area.

Gladys Porter Zoo is within easy driving distance of the state's most popular beach resort, South Padre Island, and is opened 365 days a year. Operating hours are Monday through Friday, 9 a.m. - 5 p.m.; Saturday and Sunday, 9 a.m. - 5:30 p.m. Admission is $9 for adults, $7.50 for seniors, and $6 for children under 13 years old (those under 2 are free).
